Press Coverage of Global Climate and Environment Conferences” in the Sixth Session of the Media and Climate Program

On the evening of Saturday, September 14, 2024, the sixth session of the Media and Climate program was held. This program is implemented by the National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD) in cooperation with the Arab Network for Scientific Journalism and the Humanitarian Journalism Foundation. The session was conducted via Zoom and was titled “Press Coverage of Global Climate and Environment Conferences.”

The session was presented by Sousan Al-Awadi, an academic in the field of journalism, an expert in environmental science and climate change, the head of the Impact Foundation for Climate Action, and a member of the official youth constituency in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The session focused on discussing the importance of climate conferences, their role, and how to cover them effectively in the media.

Expert Sousan Al-Awadi emphasized the important role of journalists in covering environmental and climate conferences. She highlighted the need for journalists to be knowledgeable about climate issues, how to address them, the importance of planning in advance, and having the ability to identify the participating delegations and negotiators at the conference.

She also outlined a range of benefits and opportunities that can be gained by journalists interested in covering international conferences. These include building relationships with sources from various groups, acquiring new skills, and gaining experience that has a positive impact on their professional performance, among other things.

She noted that opportunities for independent journalists and those interested in the field of climate and environment to obtain opportunities to cover global conferences have become possible for those who prove their competence in the field of climate journalism.

Expert Al-Awadi provided the participants with a set of tips and instructions that journalists should know and take into account when covering events of global conferences specializing in environmental and climate issues.

This session is the sixth in a series of sessions of the Media and Climate program launched by the National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD) in cooperation with the Arab Network for Scientific Journalism and the Humanitarian Journalism Foundation, in order to develop the capacities of journalists in dealing with topics related to press coverage of global climate and environment conferences.
