Climate Financing Report…Session 13 of the Comprehensive Youth Training Program for Climate Action

A session on “Climate Financing” was held on the evening of Wednesday, July 10th, as part of the Youth Training Program for Climate Action (2024), led by climate finance expert, Consultant, and Dr. Saeed Shakiry. Approximately 15 participants attended who have been involved in climate change conferences.

The session began with an overview of the topics ranging from climate change to its financing methods and sources. Climate financing was defined as “financial resources directed to support efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and adapt to it.”

Dr. Shakiry noted that discussing climate change and allocating climate finance in a single session is challenging, and he then moved on to a historical overview of agreements through conferences and global frameworks to regulate climate action. He also touched on ongoing emissions and the persistent impact of COVID-19.

Dr. Shakiry mentioned the sources of climate finance through international funds and the basic criteria for such funds, emphasizing that these are not simply grants given to countries but also include loans. He pointed out that Arab countries should have nationally accredited agencies to be able to access climate support and contribute to mitigation and adaptation to climate change. He also highlighted the need for developing countries to know the appropriate wording for submitting funding requests, emphasizing that seeking and receiving support is a right that can be achieved through the pressure of civil society and youth on countries to allocate budgets for climate finance.

The session concluded after participants’ contributions, with Dr. Shakiry stating, “We are facing the problem but not taking advantage of funding opportunities. We should not rely on foreign countries for funding and rely on afforestation. We need youth initiatives and national creativity in this regard.”

The Executive Director of the National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development, Mohammed Al-Yatari, concluded by thanking Dr. Shakiry and the participants, announcing specialized programs in climate action.
