The National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD): The Falling of Parts of the “Al-Gharib” Tree as Evidence of the Dangers Threatening Biodiversity in Yemen

The National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD) expresses its profound regret regarding the incident of parts of the rare Al-Gharib tree falling in Taiz Governorate, which occurred today, Monday. This tree is estimated to be over two thousand years old and is considered one of the most significant environmental symbols in the region.

The Forum affirms that this unfortunate incident serves as clear evidence of the imminent dangers facing biodiversity in Yemen, amidst neglect and a lack of attention. Had the tree been subject to specialized studies and received the necessary care, it would have been possible to prevent the incident from occurring in this unexpected manner.

The National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD) calls upon the concerned authorities, including the government and civil society, to take urgent steps to protect the remaining part of the “Al-Gharib” tree and other rare and endangered plants and species.

The Forum also urges all activists and advocates for environmental issues in Yemen to enhance societal awareness regarding the importance of preserving and protecting biodiversity.
